MIRANDA MUSICAL SOCIETY'S 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
On Saturday, November 4th 2017, members past and present gathered at the Scylla Bay Room of the Como Hotel for Miranda Musical Society's 50th year anniversary celebration. It was undeniable from the members present that our society has a rich history of overwhelmingly talented volunteers who have dedicated years to the stage and our society. From sets, to accounting, treading the boards, costumes, archives and everything in between, it was a truly unique occasion to celebrate the treasured community we have built together as a society for 50 years.

MMS WOWS THE CROWD ON AUSTRALIA DAY!
A message from our President Andrew Symes.
"A massive thank you to everyone who helped with, contributed to and participated in the MMS Australia Day celebrations as part of the Sutherland Shire Councils event at Cronulla Beach today. Firstly to the performers, Christopher Hamilton, Jack (Sharon Jackaman), Rozlyne Vidal, Johnny Acosta, Lolly Kate Butler, Gavin Leahy, Louise Symes and Adam Foster, you were all amazingly talented and wonderful.
I couldn't be prouder of your efforts, and hopefully you loved it as much as I did. To the crew in the MMS stall, Gabby Kate, Tim Wotherspoon, Paul and Rachel Miller, Wayne and Rachel Amanda Thomas, Cathy Boyle, Alex Kat Walker, Nathan Charles Maynard, Rebecca Marcia Mendham and Dean Turner - you guys were solid all day, and it's that sort of commitment that makes our society great. To our partners for the day, EMS (especially Amanda Oscuro) - thank you for joining us and being so consultative, friendly and professional - it really was a pleasure to work with you. To my little baby Chantelle Symes - your presentation of the anthem was outstanding and made me so proud. And finally to the SSC staff, Lyn, Louisa and Jeanette, thank you for inviting us, looking after us, and facilitating such a great opportunity. A fantastic day was had by all. Special thanks also to Louise Symes for all the help behind the scenes - you have been amazing".

THE SECRETS OF SHIPROCK
Some of our newer members may have never heard of 'Shiprock'. Bob was kind enough to write a short piece to let everyone know exactly 'What Happens At Shiprock?'
What IS Shiprock, you ask? First of all, there has been a name change from “The Shiprock Mafia” to “The Shiprock Cardio Rehab Centre”. Both Bob and Col Peet have had heart procedures and Peter Munn has a pacemaker. Only David Glance is a cleanskin in the heart department and we hope he stays that way. While we create the sets and props for MMS shows at Shiprock, some members will not be aware that we conduct a very busy hire department, hiring sets and props to other community theatre groups and schools Australia wide. We currently have props for Beauty and the Beast in Brisbane for the Savoyards, new Evita props at Roo Theatre Shellharbour and many of our props for Phantom of the Opera were recently used at the Packemin production at Parramatta. At the moment, we are working on the set and props for Carousel, a lot of new props for Evita which will be used in May for Willoughby Theatre Company’s production, later for our own production, then for Tamworth next year, and probably Manly somewhere in between. To add to this, all of our Annie pieces are in Orange for a May production. Future work includes Trial by Jury for Rockdale Opera, Fiddler on the Roof for Emmanuel College Randwick and yet another Beauty and the Beast for the Griffith Regional Theatre. Although we hire complete shows, we get many requests for just a few items, like our false proscenium for the Engadine Musical Society production of Legally Blonde. That’s what we know of for the time being as hardly a day goes by without a phone call or email request for something we might be able to do. So, in answer to the often asked question, “are you busy at Shiprock?”…Yes! Cheers Bob Peet |

Audiences of all ages agreed - our September production of ANNIE was truly spectacular!
Just some of the terrific feedback for ANNIE.....
Congratulations, the production was outstanding. It was of the quality you’d expect in any major metro theatre in all respects - cast, casting, wardrobe, set, direction, orchestra – you name it!
It was hard to believe that it wasn’t a full-on professional production. Everybody excelled at their job. I think you might have converted me into a musical theatre fan, it really was fantastic and very entertaining, a great family outing I think we will put our names on the MMS subscription list Please pass on mine and Jack’s appreciation to the cast and crew if you get the chance. Stu |
We came to see Annie last night and wanted to say how BRILLIANT it was, everything about the show stunned and amazed us with an incredible orchestra too.
I have seen many many professional shows and have to say that your Annie was on Par with many of the great professional shows out there and we will be coming to more productions The cast were all incredible and of course little Annie herself just made us smile from ear to ear. THANK YOU SO MUCH as we had been wanting to see Annie live for a while and the show was a blessing ! Sharyn and James |
We are still talking about the show and how brilliant it was and so professional.
Please can you also tell the Orchestra ( I am a musician myself) that we were amazed at how professional they were and the conductor's great enthusiasm !! We had A row seats !!! All in all exceptional! |
STAGE WHISPERS REVIEW FOR ANNIE
I’m betting that even if you’ve only seen a handful of musicals over the last four decades, one of them will have been the story of the eternally optimistic red-headed orphan, adopted by a billionaire, who single-handedly solves America’s Great Depression woes with a well-placed reprise of the showtune ‘Tomorrow’.
Annie is a joyous, old-fashioned family-friendly musical comedy, and director / designer Bob Peet has staged a bright, clean conventional production, with its brisk pace and scene changes facilitated by a well-conceived design for this challenging stage...more |
SYDNEY ARTS GUIDE REVIEW FOR ANNIE
Do you need a glass-half-full approach to cope with the modern world? Musical theatre can assist, especially Miranda Musical Society’s production of ANNIE. This current version showcases genuine, likeable optimism in a slick package.
The joyous individuals in the cast of orphans are a credit to their birth parents and the local musical group which is fostering their talent. Two casts of orphans alternate across the show’s run. I saw the so-called ‘Warbucks’ cast, which were pure energy from start to finish. Amidst detailed period sets, props and stunning outfits, the children...more |
ANNIE WAS A REAL FAMILY AFFAIR!Wayne Thomas played laundryman Bundles & his daughter Rachel one of the fabulous Boylan sisters.
Brad Hunter and Adele Gillies, along with their respective daughters Alana and Clare, also trod the boards together whilst father and son Tim and Ivan Dennis finally took to the stage together for the very first time! |

Geraldine Turner OAM gives back to Community Theatre
Our Patron, (and muscal theatre legend Geraldine Turner) recently gave our members the most extraordinary masterclass on all things "musical theatre".
A message we received from from one of our members sums up the feeling on the day ."Hey guys, just wanted to sincerely thank you for organising today's masterclass with Geraldine Turner. She was incredible, beautifully honest and I've walked away re-inspired and with a renewed respect for my fellow singers. Such a great experience. Thank you for stepping out of the box and giving people like me the chance to work one-on-one with one of Australia's greats. Brilliant afternoon." Some pics of the day below. |

We are thrilled to announce Musical Theatre Legend
Miss Geraldine Turner OAM as our Patron! Geraldine Turner is synonymous with Australian show business. With a huge legion of musical theatre fans she has performed in almost every aspect of the entertainment industry; an attribute which helped earn her an Order of Australia medal in the 1988 Bicentennial Honours list. Geraldine has wowed theatre-going audiences across Australia in musicals like ‘Oliver’, ‘Chicago’, ‘A Little Night Music’, ‘Anything Goes’, ‘Guys and Dolls’ and ‘Into The Woods’ to name a few. She has won several awards including two Green Room Awards (in 1984 for her role as Nancy in ‘Oliver’ and again in 1989 for her role as Reno Sweeney in ‘Anything Goes’) and two Mo Awards for her performance as Mrs Lovett in ‘Sweeney Todd’. Most recently she was on our TV screens in “House Husbands” and has also worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes as President of Australian Actors Equity for many years. To quote Geraldine, she has "been there, done that and more!" and in becoming Patron for Miranda Musical Society feels it is her way of saying thank you to the industry she loves. “I’ve been fortunate to have spent many years of my life on stage in musicals and I’m grateful that my career is still going strong. Miranda Musical Society is regarded as one of the premier Community Theatrical Societies in Sydney, giving amateur singers, actors and dancers the opportunity to perform in terrific musicals on a regular basis. I look forward to being a mentor to all these people by passing on my knowledge and sharing my perspective. It is very important to me to hand down my experience”. Miranda Musical Society president Andrew Symes said “We are thrilled to have Geraldine as our Patron – not only does she bring the reputation of the best in Australian theatre, but a sense of aspiration for our performing community. We are all huge fans of Geraldine and feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity. It’s going to be wonderful to have her on the team and we are all very excited!” Geraldine said “I am looking forward to being the guest of honour at the opening night of Miranda Musical Society’s upcoming production of Oklahoma on March 19th at The Sutherland Entertainment Centre. Oklahoma contains one of my all-time favourite lyrics in musicals. ”Sweetheart, they're suspecting things" …. more than wonderful!" |

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - OCT 2013
A massive congratulations to all involved in the Sydney Amateur Premiere of 'Phantom of the Opera'. From an audience perspective, the feedback has been wonderful, and indeed inspiring in terms of the talent on display and the positive teamwork behind the scenes to ensure a wonderful theatre experience all round. Speaking to many of the cast, crew and the production team, this show will be one they will always remember fondly given its status as a premiere, the audience reaction and the new friendships made given the broad make up of cast from all over Sydney and neighbouring cities. With Phantom now over, we look forward to the 2014 season. |
